How are varicose veins investigated?
Special investigations are necessary to show the full extent of the varicose
veins as it is not always clear from where the varicosities have arisen
particularly when varicose veins have recurred after a previous operation.
The most experienced vascular surgeons can find it difficult to see exactly
where the problem is without the use of these investigations.

A technique called computerized Duplex ultrasound imaging
is now widely available and acknowledged to be the best way for investigating
venous disease. It is the most informative technique available and
is not invasive. The investigation is very similar to that used when
scanning during pregnancy and reliably shows the cause of the varices
and can also show thrombosis of the deep veins, if present, since
it obtains images of the veins and measures blood flow in the vessels.
This technique makes it possible to visualise any leaking valves.
It is advisable to always have this investigation prior to undertaking
any form of treatment.
