PhotoDerm - Treatment of varicose veins and thread veins by injections sclerotherapy PhotoDerm and surgery

PhotoDerm

Small thread veins on the facial area can be treated using PhotoDerm which is an intense pulsed white light. Light passes through the upper layers of the skin which causes the blood temperature to rise high enough for coagulation to occur. When the blood has thickened it sticks the walls of the vein together. This does not cause damage to the skin or surrounding tissue. The body will then absorb the damaged vessels.

The design of PhotoDerm has specially been done in order to provide flexibility when choosing the wavelength, pulse duration and energy levels depending upon the depth and size of blood vessels and also the skin colour. It is important that the patients who wish to have this treatment are not suntanned and it is not suitable for dark skins. Exposure to the sun should be avoided for 2 weeks before and after the treatment.

The treatment is carried out by a rectangular light guide and filter which is placed above the skin. The light is fired through a cold gel which allows uniform delivery through the air to the skin. It is recommended that eyes are kept shut and protective goggles worn during this treatment as the light can be very bright. The treatment feels like an elastic band when it pings on your skin. The cheek areas near to the nose may cause a bit more discomfort as this is a sensitive area.

There is a reddening of the area treated afterwards and a there may be a feeling akin to sunburn. In some cases a small blister may occur but this will heal with no scarring. Make-up can be applied immediately after treatment.

PhotoDerm is an extremely good way of treating facial veins. It is normal for 3-4 sessions to be required at 2-3 weeks intervals. The likelihood of recurrence is very small if a good moisturiser or sunblock is applied when exposed to sunshine.
